If you hide your chat list, you can still view your notifications in the minimised window pane.
When a notification is receieved, a smaller notification alert will become visible in at the top of the minimised window pane detailing counters of unread messages and @mentions (Figure 1):

When the chat list is unhidden, the smaller notifications will be replaced with the normal sized notification alerts.
